Building Wyrmsun on Debian 8

Written on March 31, 2016

Wyrmsun is a free, open-sourced strategy game built on the stratagus engine. If you don’t care to build this, you can download it on Steam and support the developer. Or if you’re like me, you can build it from source.

NOTE: Part of this tutorial will focus on what engine you should use, so don’t download Stratagus yet!

The most useful tool for you is to use the PPA source. You can follow these instructions to install a package from Ubuntu’s PPA. If you’re running Debian 8, I recommend using Ubuntu 14.04. You can see this list to determine the best Ubuntu build for you.

Installing from PPA will give you a dependency list, which will be useful. Do not install this. It’ll waste your time. Instead, you can run apt-get -t install instead. I just ran apt-get install and then removed it after I realized I couldn’t use the package – as you will learn.

The list below is for AMD64 builds, and so you may need more dependencies. This is the most information I could give you without knowing your particular build environment. You may want to install all of these anyways. You can check out the official list here.

First, install all the dependencies for your build. If you’re running AMD64 Debian 8, all you would need is posted below. I recommend using your terminal at this point because we’ll be working with it quite a bit after this point.

Dependencies:

cmake
doxygen
imagemagick
sharutils
liblua5.1-dev
liblua5.1-0-dev
libtolua++5.1-dev
zlib1g-dev
libbz2-dev
libpng12-dev
libmng-dev
libmikmod2-dev
libogg-dev
libtheora-dev
libsdl1.2-dev
libsqlite3-dev
libgles1-sgx-img-dev
libglu1-mesa-dev
libglu-dev
libgles1-mesa-dev
libsdl-gles1.2-dev
libsdl2-dev
libglu1-mesa-dev
libglu-dev
libfluidsynth-dev
SQLite
zlib-gst
libpng
libpng++-dev
sdlbasic

Next install git-core if you haven’t already.

Make a directory of your choice, go into it with cd.

We’re going to download the source code now. This is how we do it.

First, if you’re using root, exit su. Just exit.

This is your engine.

git clone https://github.com/Andrettin/Wyrmgus.git

and

This is the game.

git clone https://github.com/Andrettin/Wyrmsun.git

First go into Wyrmgus and init OMAL module.

cd Wyrmgus

git submodule update --init

Now you’re ready to build the engine.

mkdir build

cmake .. && make

The trick here is to build cmake after it’s been built. So if the command above doesn’t work just do:

cmake . in the directory of the source files – so in the “Wyrmgus” directory.

Then make wherever the cmake files fall.

At this point, you should have the stratagus command. Test it. If you don’t, something went wrong. You may have built the software wrong. Try debugging it. Look for error codes. Shoot an issue notice here if all else fails. Be sure you know how to post your error log.

If your stratagus command works. The output should say this:

Maybe you need to specify another gamepath with '-d /path/to/datadir'?

Run this to play the game:

stratagus -d [direct path of Wyrmsun]

It’s smart to keep Wyrmsun as a Git – since you can update this source with this code while in the directory:

git pull

That’s it. You can now play.

Take me home.
